A Juba League leader was hacked to death in the Nijkunjara Samity Bazar area of Ghopal Union under Chhagalnaiya upazila in Feni on Saturday.
The deceased, Jobayer Hossain Parvez, 35, of village Nijkunjara under the upazila, is the organising secretary of the Ghopal Union unit of Juba League.
The police said that the victim, accused in dozens of criminal cases, was released from jail on bail a few days ago.
Locals and the police said that the victim locked in an altercation with two other youths, Shahadot and Mamun, on Friday evening and later they called Jobayer from his house and took him to an unknown place.
As Jobayer did not return home at night, his relatives began searching for him, they said.
They said that the locals found a body floating in a pond in the Nijkunjara Samity Bazar area and informed the police.
The police said that they rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Feni Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination and that the victim’s brother, Nayan, identified the body.
Neither Shahadot nor Mamun could be reached for comments over the phone. None could be found in their homes on Saturday.
Ghopal police investigation centre in-charge, inspector Ratan Debnath said that they were trying to nab the suspects.
He said that the assailants killed the victim by hacking him on his hands, legs and other parts of his body and slitting his throat sometime in the early hours of the day and dumped the body into the pond.
Feni superintendent of police Protyush Kumar Majumder said that the victim’s father submitted a written complaint in the afternoon and the police were trying to nab the suspects.
