Immigration police arrested Mohammad Ashraful Haque, widely known as Don, in the murder case of actor Salman Shah at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today.
Ashraful was arrested at the airport and later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Superintendent of Immigration Police Md Kamrul Islam told The Daily Star around 3:00pm.
CID Dhaka Metropolitan West unit Special Superintendent Golam Benazir said the murder case was filed with Ramna Police Station.
He said the investigation officer had earlier sent a requisition to the airport authorities, asking them to prevent the accused named in the first information report (FIR) from leaving the country. A court directive had also been issued to this effect.
However, Ashraful arrived at the airport around 6:00am today to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, Golam Benazir said.
The accused has since been sent to court, he added.
Shahriar Chowdhury Emon, who took the screen name Salman Shah and saw a mercurial rise to popularity among filmgoers in the 1990s, was found dead at his Eskaton Road residence in Dhaka on September 6, 1996 at the age of 25.
