Jamaat-led alliance candidate of NCP for Dhaka-9 constituency Nasir Uddin Patwari was rescued by members of the Bangladesh Army after he was allegedly confined during a visit to a polling centre in Shajahanpur on Thursday.

The incident took place at about 12:30pm when Patwari went to inspect voting at the Shajahanpur Railway High School centre.

According to witnesses, after Patwari entered the polling centre, supporters of paddy sheaf candidate and BNP leader Mirza Abbas attempted to enter the school building through the main gate. The on-duty staff then closed the gate.

Later, more than a hundred BNP leaders and activists reportedly gathered on the field of the school premises, leaving Patwari unable to leave the centre.

After about 20 minutes, a team of the Bangladesh Army, along with members of other law enforcement agencies, arrived at the scene and escorted him out.

While leaving the area, several hundred people allegedly attempted to chase him from the back, creating further tension.

Contacted for comment, Mirza Abbas told journalists, ‘I do not know anything about this incident.’

Nasir Uddin Patwari did not speak to the media at that time.
