BURIGANGA’S PLASTIC PERIL: A thick layer of plastic waste buries much of the Buriganga riverbank in Islambagh, where recycling activities are eating away this vital waterway. The discarded waste eventually makes its way into the river, disrupting its natural flow and threatening the ecosystem. A 2021 study by researchers from Jagannath University’s Department of Zoology, which examined plastic debris at five points along the Buriganga, found that the growing plastic burden was affecting fish biodiversity and fishing activities. Experts have repeatedly warned that plastic contamination along the riverbank poses threats to fish and ultimately to human health and called for stronger action against illegal dumping.
