A special cultural event was held yesterday (June 12) to mark the birth anniversary of legendary composer, lyricist and Baul saint Ukil Munshi (1885–1978). The programme was organised by KUN Creative Studio under the theme, “Biccheder Bazar: Biroher Oitijjho ebong Somokalin Bicchinotar Punorpath” (The Market of Separation: Re-reading the Heritage of Longing and Contemporary Isolation).

The event aimed to explore Ukil Munshi’s philosophy of longing and separation in the context of modern urban loneliness, emotional isolation and mental struggles. The programme brought together music, discussion sessions and visual presentations.

One of the main attractions of the event was the unveiling of a historically grounded portrait of Ukil Munshi. As no known photograph or visual record of the Baul saint exists, the portrait was created through a research-based reconstruction process. The creative team used oral family histories, regional historical information and facial similarities among family members to develop a possible representation of his appearance.

The portrait was officially unveiled by Ukil Munshi’s grandson, Kulkul Ahmed.

Alongside the unveiling, visitors were introduced to the different stages of the portrait’s creation process. A special documentary titled “Ektarar Imam”, directed by filmmaker Anarjo Murshid, was also screened. The event further featured an archive wall and visual installations that combined traditional folk elements with contemporary artistic expression.

The second part of the programme included musical performances and a seminar. Researchers, filmmakers and cultural thinkers discussed the importance of revisiting the tradition of longing and separation in an era when many people feel increasingly isolated despite technological advancement.

Traditional songs from the Bhati region were also performed, offering audiences an immersive cultural experience.

Organisers said that Ukil Munshi’s songs are not merely a source of entertainment but also a profound reflection on human emptiness, longing and emotional experience.

By combining music, research and visual art, the event celebrated Ukil Munshi’s contribution to Bangladesh’s folk heritage.
