Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUcsu) office-bearers, backed by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), have alleged that Islami Chhatra Shibir is using the student body to implement its party agenda.
The allegation was raised at a press briefing on JnU campus today.
Speakers at the event said leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir are attempting to use JnUcsu “as a vehicle” for partisan programmes, instead of working for students’ welfare.
JnUcsu Library Secretary Md Riasal Rakib said, “Although JnUcsu is meant to be a platform for general students, it has been used to implement partisan programmes since the election. A recent protest procession was also organised without any discussion with us.”
He further alleged, “Despite being elected representatives, we are not informed about such decisions. Even yesterday, a protest march was decided unilaterally.”
Rakib warned that if attempts to use JnUcsu’s banner for party agendas are not stopped, they will be compelled to take necessary action.
Literature and Cultural Secretary Takrim Ahmed said, “JnUcsu is a platform representing students. Using its banner to promote personal or party statements is inappropriate.”
He also alleged that a group is deliberately trying to damage the image of JnUcsu and called on all to remain aware and united.
Transport Secretary Md Mahid Hasan and Executive Member Sadman Samya were also present at the press conference.
Commenting on the issue, JnUcsu General Secretary and JnU unit Chhatra Shibir President Abdul Alim Arif said, “We protested an attack on elected student leaders, and now being accused of pursuing a partisan agenda. If speaking out against violence is considered political, then defending or justifying such attacks is equally, if not more, political.”
“Elected representatives should stand for students, not shield wrongdoing,” he added.
