The government has dismissed four police officers from service after departmental proceedings found charges of misconduct and desertion against them proved.
The officers are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) joint commissioner Sanjit Kumar Roy, former deputy commissioner Manas Kumar Podder, former Rangpur superintendent of police Mohammad Shahjahan, and additional superintendent of police Hafiz Al Faruk.
The Discipline-1 Branch of the home ministry issued four separate notifications today dismissing them with effect from different dates.
Senior Secretary Monjur Morshed Chowdhury signed the notifications by order of the president.
According to the notifications, the four officers remained absent from their respective workplaces without authorisation. Departmental proceedings were initiated against them on charges of “misconduct” and “desertion” under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.
Sanjit Kumar Roy was a joint commissioner of DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) Admin and Support Services before being suspended. He remained absent from work without permission from September 17, 2024, the notification said.
Authorities tried several times to contact him at his present and permanent addresses and through email, but he did not return to work. After the charges against him were proved in departmental proceedings, he was dismissed with effect from September 17, 2024.
Manas Kumar Podder, a former DMP deputy commissioner, was attached to the office of the Barishal Range DIG while under suspension. He had remained absent from his workplace since October 18, 2024.
The government dismissed him with effect from that date after the charges against him were proved in the departmental proceedings.
Mohammad Shahjahan, former superintendent of police in Rangpur, was attached to the office of the Chattogram Range DIG while under suspension.
He was supposed to return to work on January 16, 2025, after his casual leave ended, but did not do so. He also did not inform the authorities in writing or verbally about his absence, according to the notification.
He was dismissed with effect from January 16, 2025.
Hafiz Al Faruk, an additional superintendent of police promoted to the supernumerary post of superintendent of police, was posted at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.
After taking five days of casual leave, he informed the authorities that he was ill and subsequently remained away from work for an extended period without proper authorisation, the notification said.
Following departmental proceedings, he was dismissed with effect from February 1, 2025.
The notifications said the officers did not submit written replies within the stipulated time after being served show-cause notices. They also did not respond to subsequent show-cause notices after the charges were proved.
The Public Service Commission later agreed with the proposals to dismiss them, and the president approved the decisions on August 27.
