The prosecution today sought the maximum punishment for Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other leaders of the party and its affiliated organisations in a crimes against humanity case over atrocities committed during the July 2024 Uprising. Awami League’s political activities remain banned.

Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam made the submission before International Crimes Tribunal-2, concluding the prosecution’s six-day-long arguments in the case.

He told the tribunal that the prosecution had proved all four charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt, including allegations that more than 1,400 protesters were killed and over 25,000 seriously injured in widespread and systematic attacks carried out with the accused’s knowledge and involvement.

The accused, who are absconding, do not deserve any mercy, the chief prosecutor said, urging the tribunal to impose the highest punishment.

Following the prosecution’s arguments, defence lawyers began presenting their submissions before the tribunal.

The other accused in the case are former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat; AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim; Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash; General Secretary Moinul Hossain Nikhil; Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.
