Apple announced iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, 8 June 2026, outlining a software update focused on performance, design, trust and safety features, and deeper integration of Apple Intelligence.
The next major iPhone operating system will support devices as old as the iPhone 11, extending compatibility to a model first released in 2019. Apple said the update will also include major upgrades to Siri, part of a broader push to improve its AI services.
One of the most visible changes is a new opacity slider for Liquid Glass, the design language introduced with iOS 26. The slider will allow users to adjust the transparency of interface elements such as tab bars, giving them more control over the appearance and readability of the system.
Liquid Glass brought glass-like visuals and new animations to the iPhone, but some users and designers raised concerns about legibility after its introduction. Apple made changes before iOS 26 was released publicly, and iOS 27 appears to expand those adjustments by offering a system-level customisation option.
The update also includes a redesigned Screen Time experience and other trust and safety improvements. Reuters reported that Apple introduced enhanced child-safety tools, including tighter parental controls, a browsing permission setting for children and content-blurring features for graphic messages.
Apple is also using iOS 27 to advance its AI strategy. The company announced an AI-powered version of Siri that can analyse on-screen content, recall previous conversations and work with a dedicated app, while continuing to emphasise privacy protections.
