A Bangladeshi youth was shot to death by the Indian Border Security Force at Amjhol border of Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat on early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Khademul Haque, 25, son of Amzad Hossain of Uttar Amjhol village of the upazila.


The incident took place at about 3:00am on Thursday in the area adjacent to the border forest checkpoint.

Hatibandha Police Station officer-in-charge Ramjan Ali said that according to local people, when some Bangladeshi smugglers approached the barbed wire fence, about 150 yards inside India, at the upazila’s border pillar 905/6, a patrol team from the Paglamari camp of India’s 78th BSF battalion fired bullets at them.

Khademul was injured in the face, chest and head.

His associates rescued him and admitted him to a clinic in Rangpur, where he died at about 8:00am while undergoing treatment, the OC added.

15 Border Guard Bangladesh Lalmonirhat Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam said that a letter of protest had been sent to the BSF.

A flag meeting had also been called, but the BSF authorities were yet to respond, he added.
