Dhaka and several districts of Bangladesh were jolted by an earthquake today.

The tremors were felt at around 1:52 pm.

Assistant Meteorologist Farzana Sultana of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told The Daily Star that an earthquake of 5.4 magnitude (moderate) struck Bangladesh.

She said that the epicentre was in Satkhira, 188 km southwest of Dhaka.

Prof Syed Humayun Akhter, former chairman of the Department of Geology at Dhaka University, told The Daily Star that the epicentre of the earthquake was shallow in depth, less than 10 km.

Asked about any fault line in Satkhira, he said that only a fault line is not responsible for a tremor. It can happen for several other reasons.

“Another tremor happened in Satkhira around 10 to 12 years back,” Prof Humayun said.

The Daily Star readers have mentioned that the earthquake was strongly felt in Satkhira while residents of Khulna, Jhenaidah, Jashore, Chattogram, Shariatpur, Gazipur also felt the tremors.
