World Press Photo's self-reflective 70th anniversary exhibition, "What Have We Done?", is set to open in Dhaka today, hosted by Drik Picture Library at DrikPath Bhobon. The show marks seven decades of the organisation's global presence in visual journalism, inviting viewers to examine not only the images on display but also the structures of power behind who gets to document history.
Ahead of the opening, Shahidul Alam, founder of Drik Picture Library and Managing Director of Drik, spoke with writer Yatou Sallah about the intentions behind hosting the anniversary exhibition in Dhaka. Alam urged visitors to engage with the show as a site for dialogue — not just as a display of award-winning photographs — and to critically consider how visual history is shaped, framed, and contested.
The installations are now nearing completion at DrikPath Bhobon, where the exhibition will raise its curtain at 4:30 pm today. The launch programme will include opening remarks from Anna Kućma, Manager of Programs at World Press Photo; Sohrab Hasan, Editor of Chaarcha.com; and Shahidul Alam.
Running from December 6 to 20, from 3pm to 8pm daily, the exhibition is part of a larger pop-up festival organised by Drik. Alongside the showcase, a three-day workshop on photojournalism and visual narrative is underway, led by Gabrielle Fonseca Johnson, South Asia Editor for Reuters Pictures. A keynote presentation and panel discussion will take place on Saturday, December 6, at 4:30 pm.
The Dhaka programme is part of World Press Photo's global reflection on its archive, influence, and responsibility. "What Have We Done?" revisits seven decades of photographs that have shaped public consciousness, interrogating the role of visual journalism in documenting conflict, crisis, resistance, and the everyday. Presented in partnership with Drik — an institution long known for challenging mainstream narratives and expanding South Asian representation in global media — the exhibition's Dhaka edition arrives at a moment when conversations about ethics, trauma, and power in photojournalism are especially urgent.
The event will be held at DrikPath Bhobon, located at 16 Sukrabad, Panthapath, Dhaka-1207.
