The High Court on Thursday removed the bail petition of Baul singer Abul Sarkar from its hearing list after deferring the order several times.
The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher deleted the matter from the cause list, meaning the singer can now move his bail petition before another bench, deputy attorney general Asiquzzaman Nazrul said.
The court had earlier deferred the order on Wednesday and again set Thursday for delivering its decision.
Lawyers Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal and Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, acting secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, appeared for Abul Sarkar and repeatedly raised objections to the deferment of the order.
They argued that the case was filed weeks after the alleged incident. They also said that the maximum punishment for hurting religious sentiments is two years’ imprisonment and that the singer had already spent more than three months in jail.
DAG Asiquzzaman Nazrul opposed the bail petition, describing the matter as a ‘sensitive’ case.
The controversy reportedly began after Abul Sarkar performed at the annual Khala Pagli Urs and fair on November 4, 2025, at Jabra Bazar in Ghior.
A video of the performance later went viral on social media, in which he was allegedly seen making offensive remarks.
On November 20, 2025, a court in Manikganj sent the singer to jail on allegations of hurting religious sentiments by making offensive remarks about Islam.
Police said that members of the Detective Branch detained him at a music event in Madaripur early that day.
Later, a man named Abdullah filed a case with Ghior Police Station, accusing the singer of mispronouncing verses from the Quran and giving incorrect interpretations that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.
