A Dhaka Special Judge’s Court is set to deliver its verdict today in one more graft case against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina over alleged irregularities in the allotment of a Rajuk plot to her sister Sheikh Rehana in the Purbachal New Town project during the Hasina-led Awami League regime.
The other accused in the case are Rehana, her children Redwan Mujib Siddique, British lawmaker Tulip Siddique and Azmina Siddique, and 12 serving and former officials of the housing and public works ministry and Rajuk.
Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 set the verdict date on November 25 after completing hearings in the case.
On November 27, Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 sentenced Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul and 19 others to various jail terms in three similar corruption cases involving Purbachal plot allocations. Of them, Hasina was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in each of the three cases. The court ordered that Hasina would have to serve the jail terms concurrently.
According to the case files scheduled for today’s verdict, ACC deputy director Md Salahuddin filed the case on January 13 against 15 people, including Hasina, Rehana and Tulip.
On March 10, the investigation officer submitted a charge sheet against 17 accused.
The case documents showed that Tulip, while serving as a British lawmaker, used her influence to secure plots for her mother Rehana, brother Redwan and sister Azmina.
Rehana, Redwan and Azmina allegedly hid information about owning homes or flats in Rajuk areas in Dhaka, violating the Dhaka Improvement Trust (Allotment of Lands) Rules, 1969.
The cases said that Hasina abused her authority as prime minister by influencing officials of the housing ministry and Rajuk to allocate the plots.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed those corruption cases in January 2025 following an inquiry after Hasina was ousted in the student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024 and fled to India.
Hasina was sentenced to death on November 17 for crimes against humanity for her command responsibility during the July–August 2024 uprising.
