Leader of the opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday said that his party would pursue a constructive and issue-based opposition role in parliament.

Speaking at a press briefing at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad, he said that Jamaat would be a ‘reasonable and logical’ opposition focused on safeguarding public interests.

Shafiqur said that Bangladesh had previously experienced two types of opposition parties — one that functioned under government influence and another that frequently boycotted parliament after creating disorder in the House.

‘We will not be a tame opposition, nor will we engage in conduct that harms public interests,’ he said.

The opposition leader said that Jamaat lawmakers had already submitted notices on several issues, including implementation of referendum outcomes, the banking sector crisis, expatriate welfare and the border push-in issue.

He criticised the removal of a scheduled discussion on alleged cross-border push-ins, saying the issue involved national sovereignty and deserved parliamentary debate.

Shafiqur also questioned the timing of the supplementary budget, arguing that presenting it in mid-June instead of March, as required under parliamentary procedures, weakened accountability.

He alleged that rushed spending at the end of the fiscal year often led to waste and irregularities and proposed shifting the fiscal year from July–June to January–December to improve budget implementation and expenditure management.

On parliamentary conduct, he said Jamaat would avoid personal attacks and unnecessary praise, while remaining prepared to support the government on reasonable proposals and criticise it when necessary.

He added that the party might stage walkouts over important issues but would not resort to prolonged parliamentary boycotts.
