A local BNP leader and a female passerby were shot after assailants opened fire from a moving car in Dhaka's Pallabi area this evening.

The injured BNP leader was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 45, a fish trader and a member of the BNP's Nawabganj upazila unit in Dhaka district.

He sustained bullet injuries to his head, abdomen, and hip and is in critical condition, said Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost.

The other victim, Josna, 50, suffered a bullet injury to her leg.

Confirming the incident, Md Mostak Sarkar, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Mirpur Division, said the shooting took place around 5:45pm in Lane 2 of Millat Camp in Mirpur-11, leaving two people injured.

Both victims were taken to hospital. Alamgir was admitted to DMCH in critical condition, while Josna was admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital.

DC Mostak said investigators have identified the alleged shooters as Rubel, alias "Langra Rubel", and his associate Pappa, both of whom are known drug peddlers. Drives are underway to arrest them.

Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Bashir said the attackers arrived in a car, fired three rounds at Alamgir, and fled the scene.

At DMCH, Alamgir's uncle, Md Ashik, told The Daily Star that four men in the vehicle targeted his nephew before speeding away.

The family suspects the attack may have been linked to political rivalry.
