At least one person was killed and 31 others were injured in attacks and clashes in post-election violence in Munshiganj, Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Patuakhali, Jhenaidah, and Meherpur districts from Thursday evening to Friday evening.
A young man named Md Jasim Nayeb, 30, supporter of independent candidate Md Mohiuddin, was killed and in post-election violence in Munshiganj, New Age correspondent in the district reported.
The violence took place on Friday afternoon in Char Abdullah village of Adhara union in Munshiganj sadar upazila.
The deceased’s brother Mashiur Rahman alleged that about two hundred supporters of the BNP led by Shakib went to their house, abused his brother and severely beat Jasim.
Jasim was taken to Dhaka Medical College hospital but his life could not saved, he added.
At least three people were injured and two houses were attacked during a clash between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Friday, New Age staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported.
However, the situation flared up again on Friday morning when houses belonging to Babar Ali and his cousin Sadikul Islam were vandalised and set on fire, creating fresh tension in the area.
Shibganj police station officer-in-charge Humayun Kabir told New Age that the clash stemmed from dissatisfaction among rival groups over a narrow vote margin at centres.
He said that law enforcement agencies were deployed in the area to prevent further violence and that the situation was currently under control.
In another incident, leaders and activists of the BNP allegedly attacked and vandalised the house of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Monigram union president Abdul Jabbar following the announcement of election results in Rajshahi-6 constituency on Thursday night leaving three of his family members injured.
Jabbar claimed that around 130 BNP attackers, led by Monigram union BNP president Helal Uddin Rial, equipped with axes and other sharp weapons vandalised his house at Mohodipur under the union in Rajshahi.
Accused Helal could not be reached for comments.
Bagha police station OC Serajul Islam said that the police visited the spot and asked Jabbar to file a case for legal remedy but no case was filed till 8:45pm.
Clashes between BNP and Jamaat activists over voting triggered a series of attacks, counter attacks, vandalism and looting in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali on Friday morning, leaving at least three people injured and damage of properties, New Age correspondent in Patuakhali reported.
Baufal police station inspector (investigation) Atiqul Islam said that the police were sent to the spots after learning about the attacks and vandalism at several places.
At least 13 people were injured in three incidents of post-election violence in Jhenaidah district on Friday, while the office of an independent candidate was vandalised, New Age correspondent in Kushtia reported.
Supporters of Jhenaidah-4 constituency’s independent candidate Saiful Islam Firoz and the BNP-nominated candidate Rashed Khan, both defeated, engaged in clashes at Noldeanga union and Kaliganj upazila while attackers vandalised the office the independent candidate at Nimtola Bus Stand Market at around 11:00am.
Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge Jelal Hossain said that police were dispatched to the affected areas immediately.
At least three Jamaat activists were injured in an alleged attack by supporters of the BNP in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district on Friday morning.
Gangni police station police station officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Das said that law enforcement teams were deployed to control the situation and legal action would be taken after receiving a formal complaint.
Meanwhile, National Citizen Party spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain on Friday afternoon alleged on his verified Facebook account that leaders and activists of the NCP and the 11-party alliance were being attacked in various places across the country and their homes and families were facing threats.
United News of Bangladesh reported that at least six people were injured as supporters of the Jamaat and the BNP clashed over election results at Jagannathpur village of Kalidaspur union in Chuadanga on Thursday evening.
Local people said that the confrontation began with a verbal argument between supporters of the two parties after the announcement of the election results leading to the clash
