Authorities of the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute asked students to vacate its residential Latif Hall in the capital by Tuesday evening after a violent clash between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Institute authorities and the police said that the leaders and activists of the two organisations had locked in a series of clashes at Latif Hall in Tejgaon area at about 12:30am Tuesday over establishing supremacy, leaving around 16 injured.
Both groups traded blame for the violence, staging protest demonstrations demanding justice.
Institute principal Habibur Rahman told New Age that about 16 individuals of both sides were injured in the clash, while four to five among them were taken to hospital.
Injured Chhatra Dal activist Abdullah Al Sadik has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
‘We have formed a 10-member committee to probe the incident and submit a report within three working days,’ said Habibur.
‘Due to unavoidable reasons, we have issued a notice to vacate the Latif Hall by 8:00pm today (Tuesday),’ he added.
The principal also mentioned that the legal action might follow after the probe report was submitted.
Tejgaon Industrial Area police officer-in-charge Md Mahmudur Rahman on Tuesday evening said that none filed a police complaint over the incident.
‘On information, the police went to the spot early Tuesday and acted to bring the situation under control,’ he said, adding adequate police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
The Dhaka metropolitan north unit of Shibir brought out a protest procession and held a brief rally at that Dhaka Polytechnic Institute gate on Tuesday afternoon alleging that JCD leaders and activists attacked their activists and general students to establish dominance at the hall.
Later about 4:00pm, the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute unit of JCD also brought out a protest procession and held a brief rally at the institute gate, making counter allegations that Shibir activists attacked them.
Both groups warned of tougher programmes if justice was not served.
