Jail superintendent says Salam Molla suffered a 'heart attack'; dies under treatment at Sadar hospital
A man who was arrested in a theft case died in the custody of Satkhira District Jail, while undergoing treatment at Satkhira Sadar Hospital on Monday night.
The deceased, Salam Molla, 53, was of Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat, said Debdulal Karmakar, superintendent of Satkhira District Jail.
According to jail officials, Salam was an accused in a theft case filed with Kalaroa Police Station. He had reportedly been absconding for a long time before being arrested by Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station on November 24. He was sent to Satkhira District Jail the following day.
Jail authorities said Salam suddenly fell ill on Monday night and was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Dr Mir Mahfuz Alam, emergency medical officer at the hospital, said Salam was brought in unconscious around 10:45pm. "He was given immediate treatment, but died around 11:00pm," the doctor said.
Jail superintendent Debdulal said Salam suffered a heart attack around 10:00pm. "He was taken to the hospital right away, but he passed away while receiving treatment."
An autopsy was conducted at Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue this morning.
The body has been kept at the jail premises. Salam's son, Arif Molla, is expected to receive the body, the jail superintendent added.
