Expelled Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal leader Wakil Hossain alias Boga and his associates allegedly attacked police during a raid early today in Chattogram, leaving six cops injured.

He also allegedly threatened and verbally abused the officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station over the phone after a case was filed against him.

The incident took place in the Khulshi-Wireless area of the port city. Police fired sound grenades to bring the situation under control.

Wakil, a former joint convener of the Chattogram city unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, is a listed criminal, according to police. He is accused in 17 cases involving allegations of extortion, drug dealing, firearms offences and the use of explosives.

Residents of Pahartali, Akbar Shah and Khulshi have alleged that they have long faced extortion, land grabbing and the use of firearms by members of his group.

Wakil was expelled from Swechchhasebak Dal on June 8 following an alleged gunfight over the occupation of government land, according to party sources.

Six police personnel, including Khulshi Police Station OC Abdur Rahim, were injured in today's attack and took primary treatment. A police vehicle was also vandalised.

Wakil and his brother Rocky Hossain alias Pichchi fled the scene after a large number of police personnel arrived, police said.

According to police and local sources, Md Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, a lecturer in the Bangla Department of Pahartali Degree College in Chattogram, filed a case with Khulshi Police Station last night against 10 people, including college principal Shyamal Kanti Majumder and Wakil.

The case was filed over the alleged assault of the teacher, in which one of his fingers was broken.

After the case was recorded, Wakil called the OC around 1:00am today and allegedly verbally abused him. At one point, he threatened to “deal with” the officer, according to police.

Later, Wakil and his followers blocked the road and brought out a procession in the Railway Wireless area.

The OC told The Daily Star that police went to the area at night because Wakil was an accused in the teacher assault case and was also wanted under a warrant issued in an earlier arms case.

"Last night, Wakil and his men tried to obstruct police by blocking the road. Police asked them to move away first. But at one point, they attacked police with bricks, stones and locally made weapons," he said.

"Police fired sound grenades to disperse them," he added.

Additional police later arrived at the scene early this morning, prompting Wakil and the other attackers to flee, the OC said.
