Meta faces a landmark jury trial this week that could force fundamental changes to Instagram and Facebook, BBC reports.

Thirty US states, including California and New York, accuse Meta of violating child privacy laws and exploiting young users.

They are seeking damages of up to $1 trillion and demanding platform changes such as ending “Like” counts, infinite scroll, autoplay videos and ephemeral posts.

The case will be heard by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in California, reports bdnews24.com, citing BBC.

A recent ruling in New Mexico already fined Meta $942 million and ordered similar restrictions, declaring the company a “public nuisance”.

If the states prevail, Meta may have to overhaul its platforms nationwide, altering the way millions of young people experience social media.

Meta denies the allegations, saying it has long been committed to supporting young users.
