Police say investigation is ongoing as victim remains hospitalised following knife attack in Lohagara

Police have detained two persons in connection with the stabbing of Muhibul Haq, elder brother of Ishmam Ul Haq, a martyr of the July mass uprising, in Chattogram's Lohagara upazila.

The detainees were identified as Minhaj Uddin and Mohammad Bahar, Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Jalil told journalists around 10:00am today.

"Minhaj carried out the stabbing. We detained both of them last night," the OC said, adding that the victim's family has not yet filed a formal complaint.

The attack took place around 7:00pm last night in the Amirabad Station area of the upazila. Muhibul was initially taken to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex by local residents. He was later shifted to a private hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Ridwan R Raihan, joint coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Lohagara, told journalists that Muhibul was alone at the station when Minhaj launched a sudden knife attack. He said another individual was accompanying the attacker and that both fled immediately after the incident.

Some local residents claimed that Minhaj is an activist of the banned Chhatra League, though police said they could not independently verify the claim.

Shimul Dutta, an emergency physician at Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, said Muhibul was brought to the hospital around 7:45pm with a stab wound to his waist.

"There was significant blood loss. We administered primary treatment. His condition cannot be declared fully out of danger before 24 hours," the doctor said.

Asked about the motive, OC Abdul Jalil said police are yet to determine the reason behind the attack. "We are continuing our investigation," he added.
