National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has warned that any attempt to hold an election similar to that of 2008 would not succeed, stressing that the upcoming polls must follow the model of the 1991 election.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting the chief adviser at Jamuna in Dhaka today, Nahid said his party would not allow the election to be a “settled” one or a repeat of the last three polls, which he said disregarded the voting rights of the people to bring a specific party or group to power.

“There is no doubt about the election if a fair environment is ensured. But if there is a plan to engineer the election, such a plan will fail and will be resisted,” he said.

“This election has to follow the 1991 one,” he said..

He also urged all stakeholders and organisers not to create conditions that would force his party to consider alternative measures.

“If these irregularities continue, our party and our alliance are fully prepared to take any decision together, including marching in front of the Election Commission office,” he warned.
