LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the government would take an initiative to introduce a special allowance for families of victims of enforced disappearance.
He also said those responsible for enforced disappearances would be brought to justice.
Fakhrul made the remarks while addressing a national dialogue on “Right to Compensation and Rehabilitation” at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka.
The event was organised to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2026.
The minister said the government would take steps to propose the special allowance in the current fiscal year's budget.
He said legal process against those responsible for enforced disappearances would continue to ensure justice for the victims.
Family members of people who were subjected to enforced disappearance during the previous regime attended the dialogue.
Deputy Speaker of the parliament, Barrister Kayser Kamal, at the event said, “This is not the time to cry; this is the time to realise rights, this is the time to get justice.”
He also expressed hope that the Human Rights Commission would be further strengthened, and a parliamentary committee on enforced disappearance would be formed.
MP Tahsina Rushdir Luna, reserved seat lawmaker Sanjida Islam Tuli, International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam, and other guests were also present.
At the event, family members of disappeared persons shared their experiences and expectations regarding compensation, rehabilitation, and justice.
