Activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, briefly halting traffic on Monday after staging a flash procession on the Dhaka-Khulna highway at Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj, to protest the defacement of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s mural with ink.
The procession took place at about 12:00pm on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway near the Ratail Horticulture Centre area, said Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kashiani police station.
He said that one individual was arrested later over his link to the procession.
‘On information, we went to the spot but did not find anyone there. The banned BCL activists brought out the procession for a few minutes and left the scene,’ Mahfuzur said.
Efforts were on to arrest the others involved in the incident, he added.
A video of the incident that spread on Facebook showed leaders and activists setting fire on the road and chanting various slogans.
Bhaitapara Highway police station officer-in-charge Rokonuzzaman said that they were not aware of any blockade in the area.
