Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has alleged that constituencies represented by opposition MPs are being deprived of small grants and assistance that ruling party lawmakers receive for development in their areas.

“We are observing this disparity with deep concern,” he told reporters before attending a party conference in Netrokona yesterday.

“I do not know how long this government will remain in office, but we have already noticed certain signs. As you have seen, we have raised our concerns and objections in parliament,” he added.

Emphasising the principles of equality and accountability in governance, Shafiqur said those in government were responsible for every part of the country and every citizen.

“They are not accountable only to particular individuals, groups, political parties, or regions; rather, they are responsible for the entire nation. We have repeatedly emphasised this point and will continue to do so. Wherever we see discrimination, we will raise our voices in protest,” he said.

The Jamaat chief said political differences between the ruling party and the opposition should not stand in the way of the country’s development.
