Bangladesh has recorded three more deaths from dengue in a 24-hour count, taking this year’s official toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 93.

Hospitals across the country admitted 1,097 fresh patients during the period, marking the highest single-day count so far this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the 93 dead, the highest monthly toll of 39 deaths was recorded with one day still remaining in August, surpassing the 36 fatalities recorded in July, the health directorate said in a bulletin issued on Sunday.

Moreover, 19,373 patients have been admitted to hospital so far this month, up from 9,206 hospitalisations in July.

The DGHS reported that in the 24 hours from 8am on Saturday, Dhaka North City Corporation hospitals admitted 82 patients, while 109 were admitted under Dhaka South.

Outside the two city corporations, 258 patients were hospitalised across Dhaka Division.

By division, Barishal recorded 123 admissions, Chattogram 116, Khulna 243, Mymensingh 76, Rangpur six and Sylhet three.

Elsewhere, 123 patients were hospitalised in Barishal Division, 116 in Chattogram, 243 in Khulna, 81 in Mymensingh, 76 in Rajshahi, 6 in Rangpur, and 3 in Sylhet.

Meanwhile, 793 patients were discharged in the same 24-hour window.

The DGHS said 34,683 people have been hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease since Jan 1 this year, of whom 32,188 have recovered.

The health directorate has tracked dengue cases since 2000.

Last year, dengue killed more than 400 people, with around 102,000 cases recorded.
