Bus workers have reopened the Mohakhali road after nearly three hours, ending their blockade following an assurance from the administration that their demands will be met.

Labour leaders, however, warned they would block the road again if the assurances go unfulfilled.

Yusuf Ali Mridha, vice-president of the Mohakhali Sramik Union, confirmed the matter on Thursday evening.

Earlier, Md Jamal, a leader of the union, addressed the protesting workers, saying no one from the administration had contacted them since the demonstration began or offered any assurances.

"In this situation, we have decided that if no one contacts us within 10 minutes, vehicle movement from 27 districts will be halted," he said.

The blockade began after 3pm, when a group of bus owners and workers parked several buses across the road in front of Mohakhali Bus Terminal, cutting off traffic.

Protesters were heard shouting slogans demanding the resignation of an additional commissioner of police, along with grievances over vehicle impoundment, fines and alleged police harassment.

The demonstration left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.

The gridlock quickly spread from Mohakhali to Banani, Gulshan, Tejgaon and Satrasta, disrupting thousands of commuters.
