A five-and-a-half-year-old boy, Bandhan Chandra Roy, succumbed to his injuries just 11 hours after losing his father and grandfather in a road accident in Rangpur's Gangachara upazila.

Bandhan had been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Rangpur Medical College Hospital after suffering critical injuries in the accident. He breathed his last around 1:00am today.

The accident occurred near the jute mill adjacent to Monthona Bazar of Borobil union, when a motorcycle carrying the three family members collided with a truck around 2:00pm yesterday.

Bandhan's father, Prashanta Chandra Roy, 35, died on the spot. His grandfather, Nirmal Chandra Roy, 75, was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The deceased were residents of Paschim Mandrain village under Gangachara Sadar union.

Eyewitnesses and police said the three was travelling from Gangachara towards Baraibari when the accident occurred. As Prashanta attempted to give way to an oncoming truck, he lost control over the motorcycle and slid directly into the truck's path.

Following the accident, a deep pall of sorrow has descended over the entire village of Paschim Mandrain.

Mahfuzur Rahman Dulu, chairman of Gangachara Sadar Union Parishad, said, "Nirmal Chandra Roy and his son Prashanta were well-known and respected members of the community. Their deaths, along with that of young Badhan, have deeply shocked us all.”

Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Sabur said the truck involved in the accident had been seized, but its driver fled the scene. "A case has been filed, and efforts are underway to arrest the driver," he said.
