Bangladesh government has no plan to hand over Chattogram Port to foreign operators, shipping minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam told Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday.
He said this during the 19th sitting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad's first session, chaired by speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
In response to a query from Laxmipur-1 lawmaker Md Shahadat Hossain, the minister said that only terminal operations, not the entire port, may be assigned to operators, with both local and foreign firms eligible under government-approved PPP frameworks.
Rabiul added that the government had already engaged foreign operators in terminal management to boost efficiency and capacity, citing the Chattogram Port’s Patenga Container Terminal as an example.
He said that a deal had also been signed with APM Terminals BV, a subsidiary of Denmark’s Maersk Group, to build and operate the Laldia Container Terminal on the Karnaphuli riverbank.
