Police have detained a man who came to Dhanmondi Road No. 32 to pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary amid heightened security in the area.

The man, identified as Arnab Das, arrived on Saturday morning to lay flowers, according to police.

Describing Arnab as an active Jubo League member from Tangail, Dhanmondi Police chief Imdadul Islam Tayyab said: “He went there to lay flowers. We detained him for security reasons. We are here to maintain security.”

Meanwhile, around noon, a group of men identifying themselves as “July activists” assaulted a man who had arrived by rickshaw to lay flowers.

The man ran away during the assault. The group then caught the rickshaw driver, identified as 27-year-old Almas, and beat him.

Police later arrived at the scene and rescued Almas, Dhanmondi Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Jalal Uddin said.

“No complaint has been received against him so far. He has been kept at the police station for his safety,” Jalal told bdnews24.com.

Tight Security Around Dhanmondi 32

Police have stepped up security around Dhanmondi 32 since Thursday ahead of the anniversary of the assassination of Bangladesh’s independence leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and members of his family.

Access to Road No. 32 from Mirpur Road has been blocked with barricades, while iron barriers have also been placed at the western end. Movement through the nearby bridge has been restricted.

Police have deployed a water cannon and stepped up surveillance, while RAB personnel and plainclothes officers have also been seen patrolling the area.

Traffic around Dhanmondi 32 has been suspended, while a crowd has gathered towards the Mirpur Road side.
