LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the government will take appropriate measures to make Dhaka more dynamic, attractive, liveable, and scenic, instead of leaving it entangled in movements, agitation, and campaigns.

Speaking at a programme titled “Dokkhiner Janala” in the capital’s Bijoynagar area, he said the government and the ministry would extend all necessary support in this regard. The programme was organised by Dhaka South City Corporation.

He said merely raising citizens’ awareness would not solve Dhaka’s problems.

Although many development projects have been implemented for the city, it is necessary to assess how much benefit city dwellers are actually receiving, he said.

He also emphasised effective planning, accountability and structural reforms to build a liveable city, saying these issues need to be addressed before projects are undertaken.

He said that despite spending thousands of crores of taka on the development of the city’s drainage system, citizens are not getting the desired services.

The groundwater level is declining alarmingly, posing a serious danger to the city, he noted.

The programme was chaired by DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam.
