Jatiya Party candidate for the Dhaka-11 constituency Shameem Ahmed on Sunday filed a writ petition challenging the candidacy of National Citizen Party chief and rival candidate Nahid Islam, alleging that he holds dual citizenship.

Shameem Ahmed, in his petition, said that the Election Commission declared Nahid a valid candidate and allocated him an election symbol, though the NCP leader had allegedly obtained the citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominica on April 20, 2025.

He said that Nahid’s Dominican passport was circulated on social media.

The writ petition is likely to be placed before a High Court bench on Tuesday, Shameem’s lawyer Mohammad Mojnu Mollah said.

The lawyer said that Nahid suppressed information about his foreign citizenship in his nomination papers submitted to the Election Commission.

He said that such suppression is a criminal offence and disqualifies an individual from being a candidate.

Shameem said that he learnt about dual citizenship after the deadline for filing an election appeal had expired.

The writ was filed ahead of a scheduled hearing on Tuesday, when the Appellate Division’s full court will hear Nahid’s petition seeking permission to appeal against a High Court decision over the validity of the candidacy of another rival and BNP candidate MA Quiyyum over dual citizenship.

The High Court earlier upheld the Election Commission’s decision validating BNP candidate MA Quiyyum, despite allegations that he held dual citizenship of Vanuatu and suppressed the information in his nomination papers.
