India's teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made it a habit of making headlines.
In another dominant display, Suryavanshi scored a 56-ball ton as India stormed to a 234-run victory over hosts UAE in their U-19 Asia Cup opener at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai on Friday.
The 14-year-old opener put away 14 sixes and nine fours and demolished the UAE attack on his way to a 171 off just 95 balls -- an innings that powered India to 433 for six, the highest total in U-19 Asia Cup history. The previous record belonged to Bangladesh, who amassed 364 against Qatar in 2012, a match in which Soumya Sarkar struck an unbeaten 209. Bangladesh bundled out Qatar for 35, thanks to Abu Hider's astonishing figures of 9-10, and won the match by 328 runs.
This was also India's highest total in youth ODIs, surpassing the 425 scored against Scotland in the 2004 U19 World Cup in Dhaka, and the third-highest in youth ODIs overall, behind only Australia's 480-6 (vs Kenya in 2002) and New Zealand's 436-4 (vs Kenya in 2018).
Suryavanshi also came within touching distance of the highest individual score by an India U19 batter in YODIs. He fell just six runs short of Ambati Rayudu's long-standing 177 not out, scored against England in Taunton back in 2002.
UAE, in reply, were never in the contest. They managed 199 for seven, thanks largely to lower-order resistance from Uddish Suri, who struck a gritty 78 off 106 balls after coming in at number eight. Middle-order batter Pritvi Madhu contributed a patient 50 off 87 deliveries.
