An earthquake shook Dhaka and surrounding areas on early Tuesday, causing brief panic among residents, although no damage was reported.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the tremor occurred at about 6:37:36am and was of moderate intensity.


The epicentre was located near the border with Manipur, approximately 436 kilometres northeast of the BMD seismic monitoring centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The quake measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, based on preliminary readings from the meteorological office.

Although the sudden tremor startled many people in the capital and nearby districts, authorities confirmed that no incident of casualties or structural damage was reported so far.
