National Film Award-winning actor Shakib Khan has outlined his expectations from the new government, emphasising transparency, accountability and structural reform within the film industry.
He said controversy surrounding the National Film Awards is not new, with questions repeatedly raised about a lack of transparency, political influence and favouritism in the selection process. “I want to clearly say that the judging process for the National Film Awards must be completely transparent and accountable,” he told Prothom Alo. According to him, clear evaluation criteria should be established and strict policies adopted to prevent external interference.
On government grants for films, Shakib Khan said allegations of nepotism or bias could be addressed through transparent selection committees, an online scoring system and the publication of public reports. Such measures, he noted, would encourage genuine talent.
He also highlighted the sharp decline in cinema halls across the country. Although expansion initiatives were announced in the past, little progress followed. He urged the government to take concrete steps to construct and renovate theatres nationwide. Incentives such as low-interest loans, tax exemptions and reconstruction funds could help revive closed and dilapidated halls.
He further proposed encouraging public-private partnerships to establish modern multiplexes and building small digital mini theatres in districts without cinemas to reduce construction costs and involve local entrepreneurs. Tax and VAT waivers, special land lease facilities and reduced duties on imported projection and sound equipment could attract investment. Ensuring digital projection, Dolby sound and online ticketing systems would improve the viewing experience and draw audiences back to theatres.
Shakib Khan also suggested allocating screening quotas for domestic films, organising festival-based special screenings and supporting family-friendly content to strengthen audience engagement. He said cinema halls could be developed not only as screening venues but also as cultural hubs hosting festivals and other events.
Finally, he stressed that the government must ensure a hassle-free, professional and safe working environment for industry stakeholders.
