Nayapaltan was set to witness a historic May Day rally today, with BNP leaders and activists arriving in groups ahead of the programme.
Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to attend the event as chief guest.
This marks the BNP’s first major party event in Dhaka since forming the government after its victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
BNP Standing Committee member and PM’s adviser Nazrul Islam Khan said preparations had been completed despite bad weather. “The stage is ready, microphones have been installed, and we expect a historic turnout at this great May Day workers’ rally,” he said.
The rally is being organised by Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, BNP’s labour front, with its president Anwar Hossain chairing the event, scheduled to begin at 2:30pm today.
Workers from Gazipur, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Munshiganj, Manikganj, and other districts are expected to join.
Law enforcement agencies have been deployed around the BNP central office since morning. A large stage with a red carpet has been built in front of the office, decorated with portraits of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, former party chairperson Khaleda Zia, and Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Organisers said more than 150 loudspeakers have been installed across Fakirapul, Paltan, Kakrail, and adjoining areas.
This will be Tarique’s first appearance at a workers’ rally since returning home on December 25 last year after nearly 15 years in exile.
Last year, he addressed the May Day programme virtually from London.
Leaders and activists were seen gathering with red caps, T-shirts, banners, and drums, chanting slogans in small processions. Despite morning waterlogging from heavy rain, the road cleared before noon.
According to Sramik Dal sources, the road from Fakirapul to Kakrail will remain closed today, with vehicles diverted through alternative routes. Special arrangements have been made for emergency services, while free medical camps and mobile toilet facilities have been set up for participants
