Bangladesh has reported deaths of five more people exhibiting measles symptoms in a countrywide 24-hour count, while 74 new cases were reported.

According to a bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday, 74 people tested positive for the virus in the 24-hour window leading up to 8am on Wednesday.

The health authorities have been publishing daily tracking updates on the outbreak since Mar 15.

So far, 99 people have died of confirmed cases of measles, while another 791 people have died after developing symptoms consistent with the infection.

The Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of fatalities among patients with measles symptoms, at 345.

It is followed by Sylhet with 128 deaths, Rajshahi with 91, Mymensingh with 72, Chattogram with 62, Barishal with 47, Khulna with 32, and Rangpur with 14.

The health directorate said 951 people with measles symptoms sought treatment at hospitals across the country over the past 24 hours, of whom 895 were admitted.

Of those admitted, 306 were in the Dhaka Division, 213 in Chattogram, 138 in Barishal, 94 in Sylhet, 48 in Mymensingh, 41 in Khulna, 29 in Rajshahi, and 26 in Rangpur.

The total number of patients admitted to hospitals with measles has now reached 121,908 nationwide, of whom 117,690 have been discharged.

The number of suspected measles cases across the country has risen to 140,076, while the total number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases now stands at 17,543.
