Afghanistan kept their flickering campaign alive in Delhi, riding Azmatullah Omarzai’s all-round show to a five-wicket win over the UAE in a T20 World Cup Group D fixture on Monday.

Put in to bat, UAE recovered through Sohaib Khan’s 68 to post 160-9. Omarzai then ripped through them with 4-15 before blasting an unbeaten 40 off 21 balls as Afghanistan got home with four balls to spare -- their first victory of the tournament.

The result confirmed South Africa -- already on six points from three games – a Super Eight spot along with India, West Indies and England.

Afghanistan now need Canada to spring an upset against New Zealand on Tuesday to stay alive.

While Omarzai sealed the win, Afghanistan spin king Rashid Khan became the first bowler in T20 history to reach 700 wickets. His tidy 1-24 brought up the landmark in unforgettable fashion – a hit-wicket.

Here’s how monumental that is:

*Rashid has led the format’s wicket charts since overtaking Dwayne Bravo (631) in February 2025 and now sits 69 clear of the West Indian.

*Sunil Narine (613), Imran Tahir (572) and Andre Russell (508) round out the top five.

*Wicket No. 700 was a first-ever T20 hit-wicket in Rashid’s tally, with UAE's Muhammad Ari Arfan dragging on while attempting a reverse sweep.

*Rashid is also the leading wicket-taker in T20Is (191).

*At T20 World Cups, his 41 is second only to Shakib Al Hasan (50).

*Rashid has 100+ wickets in three countries -- India (181), the UAE (131) and Australia (102). Tahir is the only other bowler with that spread.

*His 406 wickets in Asia are a continental record. Mustafizur Rahman is next with 369 in Asia.

*He has taken 50+ wickets every year from 2017 to 2025 -- a level of consistency unmatched.

*Dismissals? He dominates there too: most bowled (225) and most lbw (154), with Narine second on both lists for bowled, while Tahir is second on the lbw charts (97)
