Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-14 have arrested 55-year-old Md Abdul Wahed, former ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Madarganj upazila unit in Jamalpur, in connection with multiple cases over the alleged embezzlement of nearly Tk 400 crore belonging to customers of Al Aqaba Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

Wahed, a director of the cooperative society and a warrant-listed fugitive, is accused in several cases filed over fraud and misappropriation of deposits.

According to Rab-14, the arrest was part of its ongoing drive to apprehend fugitives and maintain law and order. Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team from CPC-1 raided the bypass area of Jamalpur Sadar around 4:05pm on Tuesday and detained him.

Rab disclosed the information in a press release issued today.

The elite force said Wahed is a warrant-listed accused in a case, dated May 4, 2025, filed with Madarganj Model Police Station. He faces a total of eight cases over allegations of fraud and embezzlement involving cooperative society customers.

After his arrest, Rab handed him over to Madarganj Model Police Station. He was later produced before the Jamalpur Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, where Senior Judicial Magistrate Romana Akter ordered that he be sent to jail.

Wahed is also the principal of Milon Bazar Bhangbari Fazil (Degree) Madrasa. Police said a depositor filed a case against the society’s directors in 2025, accusing them of fraud and embezzlement.

Jamalpur Jamaat Secretary Advocate Abdul Awal confirmed The Daily Star that Abdul Wahed was once the ameer of Madarganj upazila Jamaat. He was expelled from the party for violating party discipline.

According to police, the cooperative has deposits from 12,661 customers amounting to Tk 391.58 crore.

Following allegations of embezzlement, Wahed was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami.

Officer-in-Charge Snehashish Roy of Madarganj Model Police Station confirmed that Rab-14 handed Wahed over to police after the arrest, and the court subsequently ordered to send him to jail.
