A motorcyclist, who was critically injured after being struck on the head with a brick in Dhaka's East Shewrapara area on June 9, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) this morning.

Sajit Chowdhury Rafi, 21, breathed his last around 7:00am while undergoing treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit, his mother Tania Akter told The Daily Star.

Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sajjad Hossain also confirmed the death.

According to police, Rafi was returning home on his motorcycle around 1:15am when he was attacked near the Ibrahimpur area under Kafrul Police Station. The assailants allegedly struck the right side of his head with a brick.

Investigators said the attack was planned and stemmed from prior enmity.

Following the incident, police arrested three suspects in Dhaka and Mymensingh after CCTV footage of the attack went viral on social media.

The arrestees were identified as Parvez, 30, and Anwar Hossain Babu, 32. All of them are accused in multiple drug-related cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka, police said.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Mostak Sarker said Parvez had previously lived as a tenant at Rafi’s house. A dispute allegedly arose after Rafi opposed the activities of Parvez and his associates, who police suspect were involved in local drug trafficking.

According to police, during an altercation on the evening before the attack, Parvez and his associate, Faisal, alias Kalu, threatened Rafi.

Investigators said Parvez, Kalu, Babu and another associate, Amin, took positions near the East Shewrapara bus stand around 1:15am and allegedly waylaid Rafi before striking him on the head with a brick.

Rafi collapsed on the road after suffering severe head injuries.

Police said CCTV footage showed the attackers later placing the injured Rafi in an autorickshaw, while one of them fled with his motorcycle.

The suspects also allegedly attempted to mislead locals by claiming that a brick had accidentally fallen on Rafi from a nearby building, police added.
