At least 888 new suspected measles cases and one more suspected measles death were reported in the 24 hours until 8:00am Saturday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

With the latest figures, a total of 145 suspected deaths and 14,385 suspected measles cases have been recorded across the country since March 15.

Meanwhile, one more measles death was confirmed in the past 24 hours and 80 patients were confirmed, raising the total number of confirmed measles deaths to 24 and infections to 2,489 since March 15.

The latest suspected death was recorded in Sylhet and the confirmed death in Dhaka.

The DGHS also reported that 553 new suspected measles patients were admitted to different hospitals already struggling with overcrowding.

According to DGHS data, of the newly admitted patients, 268 were admitted in Dhaka division, 99 in Chattogram and 89 in Rajshahi.

The DGHS this year has recorded across the country a measles outbreak, which is, according to public health experts, linked to an immunisation gap.

Health officials warned that the continued rise in infections could further strain hospital capacity if emergency vaccination and containment measures were not strengthened.
