Ashna Habib Bhabna-starrer “King in the Land of the Princess” has been officially selected in the Artcore section of the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.

Directed by Asif Islam, the film has been created in the style of traditional jatra theatre and features Bhabna in the role of a princess. The story explores the gradual decline of jatra, highlighting how a dancer known as “Princess” becomes the central attraction under growing audience demand. The narrative reflects shifting societal tastes and the evolving nature of entertainment.

Announcing the news on Facebook, Asif Islam wrote, “My new film ‘King in the Land of the Princess’ has been selected in the Artcore section of the Moscow International Film Festival. I am grateful, excited, and ready to share this journey with everyone.” He also extended his appreciation to the entire team, particularly Mahashankar Opera and lead actress Ashna Habib Bhabna.

Speaking about her role, Bhabna described portraying Princess Rozi as one of the most challenging experiences of her career. She revealed that she gained around nine kilograms for the role and underwent rigorous training to master the distinctive dance and performance style of jatra artistes. “While portraying Princess Rozi, I have undergone changes both physically and mentally. I have fallen in love with the character,” she said.

Expressing her excitement over the film’s international recognition, Bhabna added, “I want to represent Bangladesh through my art. Being selected at a prestigious festival like Moscow truly feels wonderful.”

Director Asif Islam shared that his connection to jatra dates back to his childhood, and the transformation of the art form over time inspired him to create the film. Shooting for the project was completed in January last year in Gobindapur, Faridpur, where a full-scale jatra set was constructed. Notably, alongside Bhabna, most of the cast comprises real-life jatra performers.

Asif Islam’s previous film “Nirvana” received the Special Jury Award at the 46th Moscow International Film Festival. With “King in the Land of the Princess”, the filmmaker returns to the same global platform, this time accompanied by Bhabna.
