Leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance on Friday at a rally in Dhaka said that they would wage tougher movements to compel the Bangladesh Nationalist Party- led government to implement the verdict of referendum held on February 12.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, a partner in the Jamaat-led alliance, organised the rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital city to press for the implementation of the referendum verdict with Khelafat Majlis amir Mamunul Haque in the chair.
Jamaat amir and also the leader of the opposition in parliament Shafiqur Rahman told the rally that they would continue movements both in the Jatiya Sangsad and across the country until the government did not implement the referendum verdict.
Some 70 per cent voters cast ‘yes’ vote in favour of the reforms proposed in the referendum but the BNP government would ignore the opinion of the voters if they did not implement the verdict, Safiqur Rahman said.
We would wage countrywide tougher movements to compel the government to implement the verdict, Shafiqur asserted.
Mamunul Haque announced the next programme of his party to press for the implementation of the verdict, which would include holding a mass procession in Dhaka on August 5 and holding countrywide rallies at district levels in June and July.
National Citizen Party convener and chief whip of the opposition Nahid Islam said that after winning in the Jatiya Sangsad elections the BNP government did not want to implement the verdict of the referendum and was ignoring the opinions of the voters.
He called on the BNP government to implement the verdict immediately.
Liberal Democratic Party chairman freedom fighter Oli Ahmed said that the student wing of the ruling party was trying to create unrest at Dhaka University and also in Chattogram.
But, Oli Ahmed said, the students would resist their attempts.
Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis secretary general Jalal Uddin said that people of the country were eagerly waiting to see the implementation of reform proposals and also verdict of the referendum.
Several thousand leaders and activists from across the country attended the rally.
