A clash broke out between BNP and Jamaat supporters in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, over a Facebook post criticising Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured in the incident.
The police arrested five people in the incident.
The incident took place in Kalirhat area of Patgram upazila at about 10:00pm on Sunday. The injured have been admitted to Patgram Health Complex. Two of them have been admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
In the Kalirhat area of the upazila, it is alleged that after Jamaat activist Rakib posted a Facebook post criticising Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the two clashed at a local Kalirhat market after Union Jubo Dal’s Publicity Secretary Belal Hossain and Jamaat activist Rakib exchanged views over the incident. Ten people were injured in the incident, including Jamaat and BNP activists. They were admitted to Patgram Health Complex in critical condition. Two BNP activists with serious injuries were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The Patgram police arrested five people the night of the incident.
Patgram upazila BNP general secretary Oliur Rahman Sohel said, ‘This clash occurred because Jamaat and Shibir activists had been posting provocative posts about BNP on Facebook in various ways before and after the elections. We strongly condemn it.’
In this regard, former Jamaat Amir of Lalmonirhat district Ataur Rahman said, ‘A BNP worker called the student’s son and beat him up. Then he beat his father too. The incident led to a clash. When the students went to the hospital for treatment, the police arrested them. We have informed the higher authorities of BNP about the matter.’
Patgram police station officer-in-charge Nazmul Haque said that they immediately arrested five people following the clash between Jamaat and BNP workers.
