Prime Minister’s Political Adviser and Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas returned home on Wednesday night, after undergoing treatment in Singapore and Malaysia for nearly five months.

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying Abbas landed in Dhaka around 9:40pm, BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan told The Daily Star.

Abbas, also a BNP standing committee member, returned on the advice of his medical board after making considerable progress during treatment, Sayrul said.

He returned home along with his wife, Afroza Abbas, and other family members, he added.

Abbas had initially received treatment in Singapore before being transferred to Malaysia for physiotherapy.

His wife, Afroza Abbas, recently said he was “feeling much better” while receiving treatment at Prince Court Medical Centre in Malaysia.

Abbas was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on March 15 and admitted to Singapore General Hospital. He was later shifted to Prince Court Medical Centre, where he underwent physiotherapy and showed significant improvement.

Earlier, on March 11, Abbas suddenly lost consciousness during iftar and was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka’s Bashundhara. A medical team comprising neurological specialists later performed brain surgery on him.

Following the surgery and subsequent treatment, doctors advised him to undergo physiotherapy, leading to his transfer to Malaysia.

A large number of BNP leaders and activists gathered outside Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport earlier to welcome him.

Carrying banners and chanting slogans in his support, they waited outside the terminal to receive him. As of 9:53pm, Abbas had yet to come out of the airport terminal.
