A convict, who escaped from jail in a prison attack during the July uprising, was hacked to death by miscreants in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district last night.
The deceased was identified as Opu Ahmed, 45, a fugitive convict accused in eight cases, including murder, drugs, and arms offences.
The incident took place at a sawmill in Marjal union of the upazila last night, Md Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Raipura Police Station, confirmed the information.
According to the OC, Opu of Pahar Marjal area under Marjal union, had escaped from Narsingdi jail during an attack on the prison amid the July uprising.
Although he had been on the run since then, local sources said he continued to move around the area openly.
Locals said Opu was hacked to death by assailants during the night. The bloodstained body was found inside the sawmill this morning and later identified as his.
Police, upon being informed, rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and prepared an inquest report.
OC Kamal said preliminary investigation revealed that Opu had eight cases filed against him, including charges of murder, drug trafficking, and possession of illegal arms, some of which he was convicted for.
"Police recovered the body from the scene and initiated legal proceedings. The incident is under investigation, and legal action is being taken," the OC added.
