Police investigation is underway; no written complaint had been filed till morning
A gold trader was shot dead in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi last night.
The deceased, Pranotosh Karmakar, 42, of Dighliakandi village in Banshgarhi Union, owned a jewellery shop at the New Market in Bashgari area of the upazila.
The incident occurred around 8:00pm at the playground of Dighliakandi Government Primary School in Bashgari Union, a char area of Raipura upazila.
Sujon Chandra Sarkar, additional superintendent of police in Narsingdi, confirmed the incident.
Family members said a group of masked men called him out of the house around 8:00pm on the pretext of discussing business. When the family grew suspicious, they asked him to talk from inside the house. But the group convinced him to step outside and took him to the nearby school playground, where they shot him in the chest and fled.
He was first taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex and later to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Dr Asad Abdullah Khan, medical officer at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said, "He was brought here dead. Family members mentioned a bullet injury, but nothing can be confirmed without an autopsy."
Additional SP Sujon Chandra Sarkar said, "We don't yet know who committed the murder or the motive behind it. We are investigating the matter. The body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy. No written complaint had been filed till this morning."
