The Sydney Morning Herald also laid into the hosts, with one report headlined ‘Australia taught a Test batting lesson by a side who refuse to beat themselves’.

Another SMH report called the defeat a ‘Darwin disaster’ and a wake-up call for the Australian side.

The Northern Territory News went even harder.

Its player ratings were headed ‘Ugly watching’, while veteran cricket writer Robert Craddock posed the question: ‘Why this is Australia’s worst Test defeat’.

The newspaper’s print edition left little doubt about the mood.

Its front page splashed ‘Darwin disaster: Aussies mauled’, accompanied by a photograph of Bangladesh supporters celebrating their victory.

The sports page carried the headline ‘Bangers make own history’, while the back page went with the pun-heavy ‘Aussies banged up!’

The reaction across Australian media reflected the scale of the result, with the defeat immediately prompting questions over Australia’s batting line-up and their performance against a Bangladesh side that arrived as overwhelming underdogs.

News Corp’s websites also gave the defeat extensive coverage, while reporting that Australia could face a substantial financial penalty from the ICC over their slow over rate during the Test.

For a team accustomed to dominating at home, the language used by the Australian media was unusually severe.
