A ransomware attack on Tata Electronics has led to the leak of confidential manufacturing documents belonging to Apple and Tesla, according to a recent Reuters report. The Indian company, a production partner for both US firms, confirmed it had detected a "cybersecurity incident" a few weeks ago but said its operations were unaffected.
The group behind the breach, World Leaks, posted more than 200,000 files totalling over 630 gigabytes on the dark web, as per researchers who spoke to Reuters. According to them, the posted data includes documents bearing Apple's proprietary markings, such as a 52-page quality inspection standard for iPhone circuit board components, and Tesla papers labelled 'TRADE SECRET' linked to the revamped Model 3 and Model Y projects. A source told Reuters that a ransom demand was made, though Tata declined to comment on it.
Apple is conducting a "full analysis" of the breach, according to a source familar with the matter, cited by Reuters. Tesla did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Security researchers told Reuters the files have been accessible on the dark web since at least June 10.
